synopsis

In the 1960s in rural Slavonia, amid golden fields of sunflowers, prosperous landowner Marko hand‑picks Janja, a shy day‑labourer, to join his harvest and stuns the village when he offers her hand in marriage to his only son, the dashing Ivo. For Janja, the proposal feels like a miracle, a leap from poverty into an “exemplary” household ruled by Marko and his resolute wife, Ana. Yet the wedding bells barely fade before cracks appear in the family’s immaculate façade. What begins as a rustic fairy tale unravels into a harrowing portrait of power, tradition, and betrayal, as Janja discovers that the price of her dream may be her very freedom.
